We all know it's important for our wellbeing that we get support from friends, family and social interaction. However, as we get older, it can become more difficult to keep up friendships or make new ones. Sometimes this can leave us feeling isolated or lonely.
Manor Garden’s Friendship Network provides a vital link for older people who are feeling isolated and alone. Our volunteers befriend local older people by visiting them in person and phoning them to reduce their loneliness.
The service is for anyone aged over 60 and living in Islington. We recruit volunteers of all ages and backgrounds to be befrienders and help people make new friendships and expand their social networks. This year we’ve recruited 71 befriending volunteers and supported 73 older people. Our volunteers are aged between 21 and 90 and come from a wide range of backgrounds and communities.
Many of our members find it difficult to get out of their homes so we arrange occasional trips out for lunch, the theatre or visiting the local park. We also help members get to grips with their phones and computers if they need it.
You can hear first-hand the difference we make in this video.
We need your support
The Friendship Network is funded solely through individual donations. We are delighted to have the support of Trullo Restaurant at Highbury Corner but we need your donations to help us keep our vital service going. Please give generously, knowing that older people will feel less lonely and more valued. Please donate now.
